Joomla backend access control - CiviCRM only users - options?
November 02, 2008, 03:58:42 pm
Has anyone thought about how to restrict a Joomla user to ONLY CiviCRM in the Joomla back end?   I have a situation where there are people who do data entry, etc., but they are pretty new, and I want to limit the damage they might do.

For the most part, I think I want Joomla integration, because having the users/customers/donors in one database is helpful.

Would using Civi Standalone and pointing it into the Joomla database be a partial solution for user I want to give access ONLY to Civi?

Thanks,
Ken

Ken - someone posted a "hack" for Joomla admin to accomplish this - in conjunction with our putting up the joomla demo, so that might help you (altho we haven't tried it). Not sure about Standalone solution - altho it seems like it might work.

I just spotted a Joomla extension that refines user access to modules, articles and components:

Haven't tried it, but it looks like it might meet your needs.

Thanks!  That component is about "Frontend-User-Access"

I was looking for backend access control, so that the "Manager" can only use Civi.

But if you can restrict access to components, could you not restrict access to all the other components?
I didn't look too closely at this - so maybe you are right, it won't work in the back end.
Maybe you could make some profiles in the front end end for volunteer editing?  And restrict access to them to only you and the volunteers?
