Do you use CiviCRM to manage Volunteers....HOW?

I did some searching about how to manage volunteers and tasks in civicrm. Found a quick reference from Lobo,

I'm looking for more specifics on how to implement what Dave suggested. I'm a new user and am also open to what works for you right now.
