We could not find a contact id - Public Listing

I am trying to publish a public listing of members in a smart group. 

Current System:  Drupal 5.7, CiviCRM 2.0.1

Items already checked:
 - I have verified that the fields are all of the Individual type
 - Profile is marked as available for public listings
 - Anonymous and authenticated user roles in Drupal have appropriate permissions
  -- access CiviCRM
  -- access all custom data
  -- profile listings and forms
 - tested with authenticated user, anonymous user


First attempt - To create a public listing of members of a group (defined as a "smart group") - first tried to follow the instructions given at http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Creating+a+website+member+directory

1 - Created smart group
2 - Created custom fields needed
3 - Created profile - allowed for public listings
4 - Created link (civicrm/profile?reset=1&force=1&gid=x) where x is the profile id

About 50 percent of the time, when a user accesses this page they receive the following message:

"We could not find a contact id." at the top of the search form, and they are unable to get any results from the search

Other times (without the user changing anything on their workstation, no code or data changes or configuration changes in CiviCRM or Drupal), the form will not display the message and the search works as it is supposed to.

Second Attempt - Using Custom Search Components

According to documentation provided at http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Custom+Search+Components, I created a custom search and had the same issue repeat.

What I have found today so far....the message appears to be generated because a "contact_id" value has not been set.  However, I thought with the Anonymous user, it was not necessary.  Is that correct?
