Family membership/ Household relationships
November 11, 2008, 04:20:55 am
I want to have a Family membership type where the person who signs up is set as either the Head of the Household or a member of the Household (I'm not bothered which) and a new Household is created (and set as the direct member).

I've created the Family membership type and set its relationship to "Household member is", but when someone signs up a new Household isn't created and an individual membership is created in the name of the person filling in the form.

Where am I going wrong - or does Household membership signup not work like this?

Thanks

Ian

There isn't built-in support for what you've described (i.e. a self-service / online form which creates both a household and the household member).

The "Family Membership" that you've created will do the following - with a back-office work-flow (i.e. your staff does the input)
- Create a household ("household x")
- Signup "household x" for a Family Membership
- Now any individual contacts who are created and assigned "Household member of .... household x" will be automatically given (i.e. inherit) the Family Membership

We do have an analogous workflow for Organization / Employees - which could potentially be adapted for the Household / Household Member scenario - but it would definitely require new code.

OK thanks for that. It would be good functionality to have at some point because it's quite clunky the way it works at the moment (no offence :), just an observation). I noticed that the Membership summary in CiviMember counts both the household membership and the contacts that inherit their membership via their relationship to the household. This means that there's one superfluous membership counted per Family - not a major problem, just another observation ;)!

Cheers
