Group Registration?
November 13, 2008, 11:16:19 am
Some time ago, I purchased DT Register for all my registrations. It works great, but I was having too many people complain about not being able to register. So although it worked great, IE users couldn't register, that's about 60 - 65% of the users out there. Not good.

So I've found CiviCRM and I do like it alot. It is very customizable, so it seems.

One issue I have, and I've read other posts regarding this, is the not allowing to register more than one person with the same email. From what I can gather, there really isn't a simple solution for the end user. I really could use this. We have conferences, and if we have a husband and wife register, they get a discount for registering together. Quite often, they only have one email between them, so there isn't an easy solution to do this, other than to have them register under both names in the same registration process. Then of course, you would have to have them pay at the door, but we really want to be able to have payments at the time of pre-registration online.

In DT Register, you have a choice of a single user or multiple users. If you choose multiple, you type in the additional users (number count). Then you register the group name and then you register each individual. The group name has the email address and the additional members in that group can be added with no problems. There is also a selection that allows you to disregard multiple registrations. So if someone registers 2 times under the same email address, it's not a problem. This is good for my situation where husband and wife quite often only have one email between them.

So I guess I'm trying to figure out if this solution is possible in CiviEvent registration. I would think that the best scenario would be to choose whether or not you want to register a single or multiple users. If multiple, choose how many people you want to register, allowing for a limit that you designate. The reason is, if we have 3 people registering but we only offer the discount to married couples, we could choose a limit of 2 people and if someone tries more than that, it wouldn't allow for it.

The next step would be to type a group name, then an email address. Then individual registrations.

I haven't come across this with CivicRM, but it does appear that we can work with managing members. I don't really want someone to have to become a member unless it would speed up the process of registering for future events. I didn't know if I should put this in a feature request section, or if this is possible, I'm thinking not, but I do want to make sure first.

The next issue I am having is if I am using Register Multiple Participants, again it the email situation has to be separate emails. I assume that is why DT Register first creates a group. If there was a way to simply add, allow duplicate registrations, this would fix the entire issue. But the reason why I bring up the Register Multiple Participants is my image button is too small. The same problem exists with Tell a Friend. All of the text overlaps and it looks very confusing, so I ended up disabling it anyway. I am attaching an image to show what I mean. I can't seem to find this issue with anyone else but I can't imagine it only being me.

Either way, if anyone has any ideas or solutions, it would be incredibly appreciated!

The issue of allowing users to register w/o an email address or with a shared email address has come up several time and I suspect we'll figure out a solution at some point. Not sure if the "grouping" idea from DT Register is useful or not.

Not sure how you're using the term 'member'? If you mean someone w/ a front-end user account on your Joomla site - offering this as an option during event registration (by enabling 'Create CMS User' in an included profile) does allow CiviCRM to prefill the person's info (e.g. email address, postal address, etc on subsequent event registrations.

RE: the display problem w/ the "Register additional..." button - I suspect it's something in the surrounding theme (or perhaps browser specific?). I've enabled this in our Joomla demo front-end and the button looks fine to me (FireFox on Mac):

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll just deal with it until maybe it gets implemented. I assume the easiest would be to add a button to say, allow duplicate registrations.

The issue with my button, it's not browser specific. It looks that way on every computer and browser I tried. I guess it must be something to do with my layout? I'll look into it a little deeper.

Thanks.

www.hccwooster.org, if you go here, I'm sure you'll see the same issue I'm having.

The issue with my button was in my template.css file. It was set to a width of 70px, so I changed it to auto and now it's fixed.

Thanks! Sometimes, the easiest solution is often overlooked, while trying to find the complex.
