Partial Plege Payments how to handle them?
November 13, 2008, 11:47:31 am
We are doing some pledge imports right now and some people have partial payments.
So if that month was 50$ due then they may have only paid $25 and
Right now you can not even do a partial payment in Pledges. (see attached it is non-editable)
And if so it may help with this.
I could modify the code to accept entry if that is all it takes?

The main reason that the payment amount is read-only is because entering a different (partial or overpayment) amount raises a bunch of complex issues about how to handle the remaining payment schedule. Should the amount of the remaining due payments be recalculated to meet the total pledge amount? Or .... (quite a few other rules could be argued to handle this).

Was this issue ever addressed? We have to be able to support partial payments for pledges in order to use CiviCRM. If this hasn't been done yet, what would the effort be to do this?

Hi Daniel - This issue has not been addressed yet. The first step would be to spec out how you think it should work (in the context of current "record payment" functionality). The scope of work is dependent on how partial payments are handled and what else needs to happen.

It would be quite easy to "un-protect" the Amount field in the "Record Payment" form and allow user to change the defaulted (expected) value. However, if the remaining payment schedule isn't updated,  the sum of payments would be less than pledged amount. Some possible rules are:

* increase amount due on remaining payments to make up for "shortfall".
OR
* Insert an additional payment in the schedule for the remainder due (if so, when should this be "due")
OR
* Do nothing
OR
??

What if contributions towards pledges were treated somewhat like invoices in an accounting system. You would choose the pledge, choose to accept a payment, and then you could choose which pledge installments to assign the payment to. If a partial payment was accepted, that installment would still show as open with a partial balance. And if someone missed an installment, then sent a double payment, you could assign the payment to the two installments in essentially one process, and be done. Overall, I think the model works better from a workflow process.  You also wouldn't have to worry about changing the remaining installment amounts on the pledge.

There's been a good bit of discussion about moving to an invoice model.
Some relevant discussion / spec:
http://civicrm.org/category/civicrm-blog-categories/finance-and-accounting
http://civicrm.org/node/619

... and 3.2 includes implementation of phase 1 of this spec (contributed by Andrew Perry and the folks at Community Builders in Australia):
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Finance+and+Accounting
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Proposed+Phase+1+Implementation+-+Data+Structure+Changes

I'm not aware of active work going forward for Phase 2 - but it makes sense to me that pledge payments would be covered in the scope (since they are really a special class of contribution). If you're interested in working on this or sponsoring work in this area, let me know.

Just checking to see if anything is going on this topic.  This here looks like the partial pledge function people are asking about may be funded? http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Sponsored+CiviPledge+Enhancements

Thx!

Yes, thx to the awesome folks at Pogstone and Backoffice Thinking for stepping up and sponsoring this functionality. It will be part of the upcoming 3.2.3 release (it's currently in QA):
