Error with paypal sandbox transaction

Civicrm 1.7.9821

When trying to process a text contribution I get the following error:

Payment Processor Error message:
10501:Invalid Configuration This transaction cannot be processed due to an invalid merchant configuration.

Does anyone have a hint as to what to check in my config or the paypal test account setup.

The civicrm demo site is working.  Could someone post the civicrm configurations defines so I can compare them to my settings.

if you are using Paypal Pro with signature, check you username and signature.

I looked in all the php code for the error string.  I did not find it anywhere.  Is this message from  paypal or civicrm?

Thats a paypal error message most likely returned by the paypal sandbox server. You might want to do a yahoo! search on that error code and/or check the paypal manuals

I seem to recall getting that error when I was trying to use PayPal PRO and had not completed the required steps on the PayPal side to signup and get verified from that service. I think even in the sandbox, you have to complete various steps including "verifying" a fake bank account etc. - these are documented on our wiki (altho possibly not completely current) and also in PayPal's documentation.

Did you ever figure out the problem? I'm having the same issues here with Pay Express and I can't figure out whats going on.

I've actually tried this now on multiple paypal accounts and I keep getting the same error.

Here is a paypal list of API errors but they don't really give a lot of information:

I know that this indicates an error with Paypal but I can't figure that out.

Has anybody had luck with google checkout?

You might want to double/triple check your paypal settings and the civicrm payment processor settings. We have this working quite nicely on both demo and sandbox

I had this problem when trying to use a paypal sandbox account with paypal web site pro.

The solution was:

 * Verify the bank account in the sandbox environment (the routing/bank numbers were auto filled). I just entered random numbers when asked to confirm the amounts deposited and was instantly approved
 * Apply for web site payments pro (automatically approved)
