CiviMail quit working after configuring Domain Information
November 14, 2008, 04:55:50 pm
CiviMail was working just fine.  I sent out a test email, but I noticed the required tokens were showing up as default meaningless data, so I found where to configure the information and went in and updated it.

After I added the domain name and the email address I have setup for the site CiviMail won't send out email.

I tried checking all the logs, but I can't see anything related to this.

I wouldn't think changing the Domain Information settings would cause this, but I don't am new to CiviCRM.

Maybe it's not related, but that's the last change I made on the site.

Is there a configuration file I can check or more information I can provide?

Maybe I should add I can't even send test email now.

I just noticed my test email addresses go to "On Hold" after I try to send a test email to them.  I looked that up under CiviMail documentation, and it said that means the email bounced.  It says the email address automatically goes to "On Hold" when an email address bounces.  I have three test email addresses: two hotmail and one gmail.  I have been using them for years and know they all work.

Does this offer any clue as to what the issue might be?

check your mail server logs, most likely they will give you a clue as to whats happening etc

If i had to guess, your mail server does not like either the from or the reply-to address of the mail generated by civimail and hence bounces all mails immediately

We have had the same problem after upgrading a client from 2.2 to 3.1 - we've done a range of postfix reconfiguring and nothing is coming up in the logs - we can send an email using the "Send Email" Activity but not send a CiviMail.

As soon as we send a test CiviMail, however, it puts the recipients of the test on hold!

Ah - it seems the 3.1.2 fix to the civicrm/CRM/Mailing/BAO/Job.php file has done the trick!

Thanks - love these forums.  Had the same issue with 3.1.1 - will try the 3.1.2

Yes, we fixed a certain CiviMail bug in 3.0.4 and 3.1.1, and that fix uncovered another bug, which we fixed in 3.0.5 and 3.1.2. The other bug made a lot of email attempts (including tests) end up as bounces, which put the recipient email address on hold.

In 3.0.5 and 3.1.2 we also enabled error reporting on CiviMail tests, so once you upgrade you should see why a given test fails (if it still does).
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.

There are several threads going on the civimail email on hold issue.  My latest observations and details are on this thread:
http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,11131.0.html

The bottom line is with 3.1.2 triggering cron with manual link works fine when the key is not defined.  However, cron can only run with the key and when the key is defined, both the manual link cron and the automatic cron cause all contacts emailed to (1) bounce (think fake bounce) and go on hold.

i'm hoping someone else can confirm/deny this. we've not heard about the "site key" issue from other folks (as yet)

Hi Denver Dave

We don't seem to have experienced this problem but we'll check the way we changed our cron jobs from 1.9 to 3.1.2 and report back if we find anything helpful.

We have tested and haven't been able to reproduce the above issue on one of the systems we upgraded from 1.9 to 3.1.2 recently.

It sounds like a local config issue - I hope you can find the problem with out too much more trouble!

I actually did post about this issue back in January:

I still haven't fixed the issue.
