Automatic Duplicate Merge?

One of my clients asks:

We have almost 800 duplicate organizations in our data.  The process to dedup seems to take quite a while.  I run the dedup screen and all the potential duplicates show up, and a link appears to the right to merge data.  However, doing that 800 or so times seems an inefficient way to go about this.  Is there a better way?

I am not aware of a better way. Perhaps there is one, however? :)

What's your CiviCRM version, we have made significant improvements for Dedupe in v2.1. So you should consider upgrade.

Can you update your forum profile?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that this site is Drupal 6.6 and CiviCRM 2.1.1.

I updated my profile but I don't think that help. I have today clients still using 1.6 and 1.9, in addition to others using 2.0 and 2.1. :)

I think the dedup screen is one of the places that I've seen that could most benefit from some redesign of the user interface.  Having a complete re-fresh of the dedup list is a major time/resource drag on large datasets.  It would be great to see this improved to either use some kind of cache table to speed list creation, or better yet, reduce the number of full page loads needed (AJAX).

wanna file an issue for this. we'll tackle this in a future release (2.3/3.0?). there are a couple of dedupe improvements on deck for a future release

This client mentioned above wants me to make him a CSV file which he can open in Excel and then mark via a simple 1 or 2 in column A, whether to merge 1->2 or 2->1 and then I will write a bit of code to process that file for him.

This is actually the second client I have that requested such a thing. I think that having a simple "merge all data" checkbox on the dedupe list screen might be helpful. Might be dangerous also, however...
