Control search result "hotlinks"
November 20, 2008, 06:44:37 pm
When using a profile for a frontend search, you're given the resultset and then the ability to view full details for the contact. The contact view page hotlinks the results. That's really great for a field like "state", but not so great for a field like "email". It would be nice if the ability to control whether the field is hotlinked could be set in the profile field settings, similar to the search/visibility/view only options.

Also, the hotlink functionality for tags should allow the user to select a single tag from the contact's list. Right now, it hyperlinks and searches on the entire list of tags for the found contact.

Brian - the "hotlink" is included when Profile field visibility is set to "Public User Pages and Listing". If you use "Public User Pages" - there's no hot link.

RE: hot links for Tags, Checkboxes, Multi-select ... this is a "known" issue and I think there's an issue tracker item for it. Can you check, and if not - add one. Would be good to improve this at some point.

Interesting. I never realized that distinction in the settings before (though a careful reading of the help text does indicate such).

I couldn't find an existing issue, so I created a new one:

Aha, I'd been led astray on this point by the help text for Visibility on the Profile Field Settings page. It says:

Quote
Is this field hidden from other users ('User and User Admin Only'), or is it visible to others ('Public User Pages')? Select 'Public User Pages and Listings' to make the field searchable (in the Profile Search form). When visibility is 'Public User Pages and Listings', users can also click the field value when viewing a contact in order to locate other contacts with the same value(s) (i.e. other contacts who live in Poland).

(My emphasis). I had taken this to mean that to make a field searchable, you have to both Select 'Public User Pages and Listings' for Visibility and check the Searchable checkbox. It seems this isn't the case: 'Public User Pages' plus checking the Searchable checkbox is sufficient, and allows you to make the field searchable without having the links in results.

Is the only difference between 'Public User Pages' and 'Public User Pages and Listings' that the latter causes fields to display as links? If so, I think the names of the visibility options and the associated help text could be made much clearer.

E.g. rename 'Public User Pages and Listings' to 'Public User Pages with Links' and change the help text to:

"Is this field hidden from other users ('User and User Admin Only'), or is it visible to others and potentially searchable in the Profile Search form ('Public User Pages' or 'Public User Pages with Links')? When visibility is 'Public User Pages with Links', users can also click the field value when viewing a contact in order to locate other contacts with the same value(s) (i.e. other contacts who live in Poland)."

Hi dave - thx for the suggestions. I've modified the inline help in 2.2 to reflect your improved language. However, the actual visibility label is an enum in the DB - so a bit late to change for 2.2. I've filed an issue to fix this for 2.3:
