Problem with step 2 of import
November 24, 2008, 09:27:20 am
Hi All,

I am having a problem with step 2 (Match Fields) on import. What appears is under column headers, the row beneath goes 3 page with across, as does the second heading. The fields are full of symbols. So in essence I have no way to view or match fields.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

George.

Sounds like a problem with the character encoding and / or line breaks of the file you're trying to import. For encoding, we expect either UTF-8 or  Windows-1252. If your file is in another format, you can configure that from Administer CiviCRM >> Global Settings >> Localisation. The "Legacy Encoding" field.

If you're still stuck, try importing a small de-sensitized chunk of your data on our public demo. http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/

Hi,

I have tried this now both with my site and the dummy site with the same result. Regards the encoding, in the settings it says Windows- 1252. It is a standard excel document I am trying to import. Is there something I'm missing here?

Regards,

George.

George,
Would it be possible for you to upload the first few rows of your import file? Rows 1-4 would be fine and should be small enough size-wise to permit uploading. This way we could try the import with your actual data and perhaps that will allow us to see what is wrong.

you are saying you are uploading as an excel file? It needs to be saved as a csv first. If you don't save it as a csv and try to import from excel format it will cause the problem you described.

Hi All,

Yes, I am an idiot. Sarah you are right. I hadn't saved it as a CSV file (stupidly). Problem solved. Thank you all for the help.

Kind regards,

George.
