Membership withdrawl
November 24, 2008, 10:58:52 pm
Hi

I am using the CiviMember feature to solicit volunteers, using a Profile to collect specific volunteer interests, talents and skills. The profile adds them to a CiviGroup that is also a CiviMail group.

I do not expose our membership to the un-authenticated (Drupal) - actually had a complaint from a member once until I figured out to exclude Civicrm in the Robots.txt file.  Anyway...

I would like to produce a work-flow to allow a member to withdraw from being a 'Volunteer' CiviMember.  The closest thing I can think of is to give them the URL to clear their Group membership in the Volunteer group that the Profile automatically adds them too.

However,  the hole is that some volunteers will not have created a Drupal account - one is allowed to but not forced to create a CMS account from the Profile settings. With an account they won't have access to CiviGroup membership.

This relates to an old post:
http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,3617.0.html. Might anyone elaborate on the suggestion of this post?  I am not yet that handy with CiviCRM hacking.

You might be able to force this by creating a custom copy of the registration template and modifying the template file to replace the "Create an Account" checkbox with a hidden field, and unhide the Username field.

Thanks very much!

A few thoughts:

1. In 2.2, you will be able to "force" unauthenticated visitors to a profile to get an account.

2. How about including an unsubscribe URL in your mailings to  the volunteer group - and they can simply click that to unsubscribe (withdraw) from that group?

Am just wondering what the advantages are of using civiMember for this. Why not just have the volunteers join the Group - then they can unsubscribe. Are there features that civiMember gives that are very important for you?
