pending contributions
November 25, 2008, 08:04:56 am
A number of our members who are renewing their memberships for next year have initiated dues payments but not completed them. I think this is due to confusion on the users' end with the Paypal Standard interface. However, it has led to a problem on our end--the duration of their memberships is incrementing by +1 year, even though the dues payment doesn't actually take place. Catching these retrospectively is a bit difficult. Is there any way to prevent this (the incrementing, not the problems with the Paypal interface)?

(Ed. to fix subject.)

Are these memberships being set to "Pending" status? If not, this is a bug in my opinion. If so, you can "catch these" using Find Members -> search for status = Pending.

I don't have a "Pending" status option for memberships. For members who are renewing, the membership status is Current, with an end date of 12/31/2009 (correct for a valid paid renewal). For persons who were trying to join for the first time, no membership was created (i.e. for each of these people, the Membership tab in his contact page says "There are no memberships recorded for this contact.")

Are you looking at these records from civiMember or just via the Membership Tab? Can you confirm that you cannot see any of the 'new' memberships via that route?

If I go to CiviMember, I see only memberships which were correctly renewed (i.e. the membership dues transaction was fully processed and we received payment). I see the erroneous renewals when I view the Memberships tab for contacts whose dues payments are listed as "Pending (Incomplete Transaction)".

Hmm - the "Pending" membership status was added in 2.0 to handle this situation - and I see it was inserted as part of the 2.0 upgrade script for sites upgraded from prior versions. Any chance you or someone in your org deleted that status? (NOTE: We've correctly set this status to "reserved" as of 2.2 so it can't be deleted using the admin interface.)

I'm the only one with access to the Civi configs, and I don't remember deleting anything. I did the upgrade from 1.9 through to 2.1 without any errors; is it possible I missed a step?

Not sure about missed steps ??

You could try adding the Pending status to your site, and see if that corrects the behaviors. From Admin CiviCRM >> Membership Status Rules >> New Membership Status ... replicate the values shown on the demo:

http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/member/membershipStatus?action=update&id=5&reset=1

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this. I added the Pending status as per the demo site, but I'm continuing to get the same problem. I actually have one member who tried three times to submit payment, and his Membership tab now shows that his membership expires in 2011. However, he doesn't show up in the list on the CiviMember page.

Is there anything I need to do to "activate" the new Pending status so it applies to my all of the membership options?

Would help to get more details about the situation above. What is the displayed status of that person's membership record? You say they "tried three times to submit payment" - where those all unsuccessful? If so why? What info do u see on these transactions in your PayPal merchant account? Are there associated CiviCRM contribution records for this member? If so, what's their status?

Also are online new member signups and / or renewals (via PayPal) working for ANYONE? And have you checked CiviCRM.log in your configured uploads directory to see if there are errors reported by PayPal?
