SMS action in activity types but not in the actions menu

As said in the subject I can see SMS as one of CiviCRM included activity types (in the configuration)
but when I get into a groups memberslist its not in the actions menu
neither is it in the choose able activities (like send a email) or in the more activities menu when I look at a members contacts.

Am I looking in the wrong places or why isn't it choose able?   ???

I've looked into documentation and the Forum but I couldn't find anything about sms besides some plans
to develop/integrate a sms module for civicrm from 2005 (which would be really awesome btw).
Does anyone know more about this is there an alpha version or anything available?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

We did integrate an SMS processor (clickatell) with CiviCRM early on. Not too many users are/were interested in SMS so it did not go anywhere. The code is still in the repository but has not been maintained.

Would be great for you to step up and build an SMS module for CiviCRM. You can use the current code as a starting point. Please contact us on IRC if this is possible and we can get u started

I (or better said my colleague) would be very interested! I just got one problem: I don't have ICR, is it possible for you to send me the code via mail?
If so could you send it today (- so my colleague can take a first look at it over the weekend) that be great!

1. You can download and install an IRC client from the web. Search for IRC and/or Internet Relay Chat

2. The code is in svn, please follow these instructions:

Okay, I installed MIRC and got connected, what room should I join?

i dont think so. would be a good community contribution though :)

The civimail structure can be used quite effectively to blast  sms' messages to a larger group etc
