Maximum number of contacts?

I'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but I couldn't find any similar question when I did a search. So here goes:

Is there a maximum number of contacts that CiviCRM can store? If so, how many?

Does anyone have any ideas of who, globally, are the biggest (by number of contacts) CiviCRM installations - and how many contacts they have?

It has been interesting me for a while. We're working on a site that will have 500,000 contacts in year one. I'd be interested in chatting with anyone who has a similar sized site.
