Suggested method for online registration gathering volunteers
July 06, 2007, 08:14:05 pm
I have successfully set up my first CiviEvent and have folks registering online. What I seem not to get is how to add something in the registration process to allow for someone to volunteer, as well as register. Obviously, this is per event, rather than a custom field in the user's profile. (Someone might volunteer for 1 event, and simply attend another.) I see that there is a field for registration for participant role. Is there any way to ask for a requested participant role during online registration?

Hmm, I am running CiviCRM 1.7.9821 and after posting this, I added a CiviCRM profile that included the Participant Role and Note fields.

I added the profile to online registration and they do appear on the form. I entered myself as a volunteer and typed in some notes when using online registration for an event.

In the confirming email that came back, Participant Role: was followed by a blank, but the notes at least appeared.

However, when I bring up the registration online, it just shows me as an Attendee without the Notes.

Is this a bug, or am I setting something up wrong?

Mike:

can u reproduce this issue on http://sandbox.civicrm.org/. If so, can u please file an issue and we'll fix for 1.8

Also what payment processor are you using. Some of the features do not work nicely with paypal standard (or google checkout). This is a bug and we'll fix it in the 2.x series

thanx

I will try to see where I can file an issue, but it behaves exactly the same in 1.8 - i.e. forms show okay when registering, drop down fields are blank in the confirming email, and the resulting registration has just the default Attendee for role and notes are blank, even though I typed stuff in.

It looks to me like the note field is being created as a CiviCRM note that isn't associated with the civicrm_participant table.

I added a field in a profile I use for events.  I chose "Participant" as the type of CiviCRM record and then chose the note field.

The not field appeared on the registration page along with the other fields and I did a test drive.

Then I went to view the event participant record I had created and noticed that there isn't a "note" field on the View Participant page.

Next I viewed the contact record and the note for the event appears under the notes tab for the contact.  But as far as I could tell there is nothing to relate this note back to the participant record for the event.  Not even a filled in subject.

I checked the civicrm_participant table and didn't see a column for a note.

Is there some way that this note is related back to the participant record?  And if that's the case, is it possible to have the note displayed on the View Participant screen?

Thom - I believe this has been fixed recently for 1.8 - check this issue: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-2074

I just ran a test on the sandbox for this Event:
http://sandbox.civicrm.org/drupal/civicrm/event/register?reset=1&action=preview&id=1

and the Note ("Comment") got saved to the participant record:
http://sandbox.civicrm.org/drupal/civicrm/contact/view/participant?reset=1&id=27&cid=108&action=view&context=search&selectedChild=event

I did find a problem w/ profile fields being defaulted to values from another participant record for the same contact - which is not valid behavior. I've reopened the issue to have this fixed (see comment on http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-2074).
