Membership payment not showing complete when successful

I hope someone can help. I have set up a website using Drupal 6 and CiviCRM 2.1. I have also set up a Paypal standard account to accept payments. When I choose a membership and proceed to pay for it I am sent to paypal and submit payment and return to the site. When I check the membership status, it shows pending (incomplete transaction)

Can someone shed some light on this for me

I also tested this on civievent and I get the same issue pending(incomplete transaction)

another thought, does my site have to have a SSL for this to work properly
