CiviCRM as a business CRM
December 04, 2008, 12:56:03 pm
I'm looking round for a CRM for my (web design and hosting) business and want to be able to do the following:

1. Record Organisations and the Contacts within each one
2. Record leads/potentials, the communication between me and them, add notes, etc
3. Quote then Invoice clients for work
4. Set up Projects assigned against contacts/organisation
5. Record times spent on projects
6. Record marketing campaigns (cost, scope and results)

I know Civi isn't strictly designed with this in mind, but it does seem to be a long way towards that.

Your thoughts?
Dan

1. Record Organisations and the Contacts within each one - CiviCRM does this as well as any system
2. Record leads/potentials, the communication between me and them, add notes, etc - CiviCRM can this well - set up the right tags and groups
3. Quote then Invoice clients for work - CiviCRM is not ideal in my view but it would be possible through activities and external links.
4. Set up Projects assigned against contacts/organisation - CiviCRM is not really project management software however CiviCase (if it evolves well) could be reasonable case management which could handle basic projects.
5. Record times spent on projects - see comments on 4.
6. Record marketing campaigns (cost, scope and results) - could partially manage this through custom data fields.

SugarCRM is probably a better fit - however there are plenty of others open source CRM business systems around - see http://www.insidecrm.com/features/top-open-source-solutions-121307/ and my own personal favourite business ERP/CRM - OpenERP (when version 5 is released it will rock)

WHMCS is by far the best for web hosting requirements.

I would look at The Drupal STORM project, it's got what yo are looking for.

I'm switching to it from DotProject, albeit slowly :)

Yup; I've looked at both vTiger and SugarCRM. Check these resources to decide for yourself:

Hope this helps you get where you are wanting to go.

Wow Rob- thanks for pointing out OpenERP which is now at version 6.
Only drawback is it doesn't track opens or clicks on email campaigns- and we're having issues installing it on our LAMP server. But- of the OpenSource solutions- it looks good.
vTiger is working hard on their horrible UI/UX and should have improvements by August 2012- but, they've been known to run late.
Sugar 6.5 is a disaster with the Community Edition. They witheld their new interface.
