Is there a way to have a sliding scale for events, where any amount over the minimum is recognized as a donation? We want to follow-up with those people who pay more than the minimum with a donation thank you letter, and track the overage as a donation in our accounting system.

I had thought about doing this by having a free text field in the price sets but I haven't played with it and I don't think there is functionality for it to be a different type of contribution. (I was actually looking at the fact that we could also get people to put a negative amount in where they have a discount of some sort )

Would you want the contribution to be split into two records? One for event payment, the other for donation? You cannot do this in 2.2 and prior, but am thinking if hooks can help solve this

Not sure as yet, will give it some more thought. This kinda relates to the issue of splitting a contribution and associating different contribution types to each split contrib
