CiviMail Public Archive?
July 10, 2007, 05:09:56 am
I have been wrestling with mailing lists and Drupal for quite some time. There are many options, but nothing seems to be quite right. CiviMail is the best. However, I would really like to be able to provide a public archive or all the material sent out with CiviMail (similar to the archives of the Simple News module in Drupal). Is there any way to do this at present that is built in? Or am I on to a new feature request?

Thanks.

There isn’t anything quite like it at present, so do feel free to file a feature request in our issue tracker.
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.

Hi Piotr,

Considering my feature request got put to the 3.0 release, I have a couple questions. I am not a skilled developer (or a developer at all), so I could not contribute in that fashion. However, if my organization was interested, we could potentially put money toward paying CiviCRM or CivicSpace to get it done...any idea on how much a feature like this would cost to develop?

Thanks.

Hi Emily,
A good way to move this forward is for you to define the feature / requirements in detail - and then we can come back with an estimate for the time / cost required to implement it.

Ideally you would come back with:
* Mockup(s) of the Archive Listings and Detail pages
* Your thoughts on permissioning requirements (i.e.  can anyone see all mailings, or is some level of permission differentiation required - perhaps a simple Public vs. Not Public flag).
* Limits on listings and "finding" specific mailings (i.e. do we show ALL mailings, only mailings from last year, provide a search by date-title-etc.).
* Any other details that come to mind as you work through this... :-)

You can post these as a page on the wiki and we can prompt for community feedback to see  if some additional good ideas come in. Then we can size the work.

This way of "contributing" to the project is very valuable - as valuable as contributing "code". :-)

This can be configured in Drupal. Start with the Mail Handler module(http://drupal.org/project/mailhandler):

The Mailhandler module allows registered users to create or edit nodes and comments via email. Authentication is usually based on the From: email address. Users may post taxonomy terms, teasers, and other node parameters using the Commands capability. See useful command documentation. Quick tutorial: http://drupal.org/node/39172.

Set up a CiviCRM record for the archive. Include that user in all your CiviMail blasts.

Use the Views module to display the emails by date, taxonomy, whatever. If you have a more specific use case,  I'd be happy to outline the specific steps.

Thanks for both of these replies. I will:

1. Try to integrate mail handler with CiviMail blasts and report back on if it simulates the features I need. If it does everything exactly as needed, then I guess we can stop here.
Or
2. If it does not provide the functionality or usability that I have dreams CiviMail can do, then I'll write up features and functionality on a CiviCRM wiki page as Dave has suggested.

My org got struck by lightning two days ago and my network is in chaos, so I hope to get these reports completed by the end of next week if I can get back on track!

After doing a bit more research on mailhandler, I see that PHP has to be compiled with the IMAP dynamic extension enabled, specifically with the line "extension=php_imap.dll". Our php installation is going to have to be recompiled, which my IT guy doesn't really want to do unless this is going to resolve the issue. I was wondering if the CiviCRM demo site has this flag enabled with php, and if so, if it would be possible for me to somehow test on the demo site (mailhandler would have to also be installed). If this is possible, I would test and fully document this process and put it back to the civicrm wiki for others. I could test and document this whole process within a couple of days and get it right back out.
Any way for this to happen?

Thanks!

Alright, after quite a bit of trouble with the Mailhandler module, I have successfully gotten all of this to work. And it really does do the trick! I put up full documentation on the wiki FAQ, with a direct link here:

Emily:

Thanx a lot for documenting this in detail.

Much appreciated :)
