Glossary of untranslated words
December 21, 2008, 11:38:11 pm
Some of the words used in CIviCRM English have a specific meaning for which no equivalent exists or an equivalent is not the same as a proper translation.
Example:
English web site ==> German homepage (homepage in English is the first page in German it is used for the whole site).
ACL (Access control list) No equivalent exists in German. It is clumsy to have to explain at each instance what ACL's are.

In my opinion it would be helpful to have a glossary that can be called up for words that are either acronyms or are not translatable. An explanation of the word or expression in more or less detail can be given.

Does such a possibility exist? If not, could it be provided?

Hey,

I'm not sure we're thinking about the same, but let me list a couple of places to take a look at/start contributing:

* English documentation contains glossary section: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/9.+Glossary
* If you're talking about definitions for translation, more like a word list (used to unify translation of different terms), you could start German word list here: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Translator+resources - I'm sure other translators would join if some seed was there.
* If you're talking about texts in inline help (some terms are "highlihted" and you can display more detailed definition clicking on them) in the user interface of CiviCRM, there is no such functionality right now and it's also not planned right now.

Thx,
m

Hallo Michal

Thank you for the hint.

I have started adding a German list of translated words and will try to apply it to the translated text.
I have added at the same place translation principles I use for German.

Questions remain:
1) Where could the user of civicrm find the translation of the used acronyms. Example ACL is not translated. (Poor German user who has no clue what it means has nowhere to go!)
2) There seem to be functions in Pootle like a list of acronyms (show checks) but I cannot find a documentation on how to use or how to change it. Where can I get more information?

Hey,

Ad 1. I guess the answer to you question is  - there is no such place within CiviCRM. One solution would be to have German documentation, or at least the translation of Glossary documentation page. Another - you can always try to translate acronyms to full words (like "ACL" -> "Zugriffssteuerungsliste" (after wikipedia)).

Ad 2. Acronyms check in Pootle is only for checking the consistency of acronym translations. If some word is written in caps, it's considered to be an acronym and compared with other translations of the same word - if it doesn't match, it's shown as a problem. Not always useful, however comes in handy sometimes.

Thx,

OK, there is no such place. But would it be possible to provide such a place?
I am not so much pressed to document Acronyms but more the use of words (often left intentionally English because it has gained an established meaning), which would be too clumsy to write  the full explanation every time.

Hey,

What would be you idea for such place? We don't have this kind of improvement on the roadmap right now, but I guess two things would help make it happen: 1) providing a specification of idea on how to implement it and putting it under community discussion - this way it could get on the radar and eventually be implemented sometime in the future, 2) implementing it and contributing to the project - this way it could make it to the core in next version after contributing.
