Multi-Step Installation Process
December 22, 2008, 02:49:21 pm
I have been struggling for months trying to install civiCRM on a Thinkhost shared server.  Thankfully, it seems to be successfully accomplished.  If not for my foolish stubbornness and how important I see this program I'd have long ago given up.  It seems to me that it wouldn't be that difficult to create an alternative installation process for shared servers, or even everyone.

What I have in mind is splitting the download package up as follows:
- An initial download that includes contacts and essential core files and then includes an install process for additional modules (mail, grants, membership, case, etc) and language packs.  Each module would be optional and could be added later if desired.

I don't know enough to know if this would require radical sugary and how this would play with joomla and drupal.

Installation seems to be a big problem for a lot of people.  There might be a better solution than what I'm proposing above, but I think it would be good if something were done.  It seems that getting the program installed is a barrier for a lot of people.

Most non-profit's do not have IT departments.  A great many non-profit's are just one person.  Like me.  I have other things to do besides struggle with code.  There is so much good that would come out of making civicrm more accessible in this way.
Thanks to those who help create and enhance civiCRM!
