Handling Chapters
January 04, 2009, 04:37:39 am
A discussion was started about expanding chapter support in CiviContribute back in August of '07. I have a similar need for my current CiviCRM project, and I was wondering if any implementation work has been done yet.

Is this something that is better handled in a 2-step process. Join the parent organization, then choose a chapter?

Will customization of some sort be required to accommodate the need?

Is there enough of a need that it make sense to build this and make it available to the community?

Thanks for your input.

There is no specific "chapter based" feature in CiviCRM

However depending on your org's workflow, you should be able to meet some/all of your needs with CiviCRM. You can use a custom field so the person can choose what chapter he/she is joining. This will not require any code customization.

Having a couple of built-in ways to maintain chapters would be a good contribution. I suspect different orgs have different ways of handling chapters

In my original post, I forgot to mention that there is a cost for joining the chapters. CiviContribute doesn't have the ability to select more than one membership type, so members can't select a chapter when joining. I also need to hook into the recurring billing setup to make sure that the chapter membership is billed correctly. I also need to allow members to join more than one chapter, which is probably less common.

There may not be a good one size fits all solution to these issues, but I would guess that other organizations have similar needs. I think you are right that any system would have to have some flexibility to meet the needs of different ways of handling this.

Since I am not familiar with the internals of CiviCRM, where would I start with the devel process?

Thanks for your help,

1. Read http://civicrm.org/architecture to get a better handle on a few core details

2. Check the CiviCRM ERD: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/CiviCRM+ERD+2.0

3. Good spec of what you are doing / places u need to modify

4. Get on IRC and ask questions :) (http://embed.mibbit.com/?server=irc.freenode.net&channel=%23civicrm&forcePrompt=true)

Joining this this thread to be kept informed.

We have 5 chapters and are currently using a custom field to identify the chapter.
