How to match names on a contribution import?
January 08, 2009, 08:45:14 am
Following instructions, I am trying to import a data file of contributions.  The file does not have contact ID's or e-mail addresses, just first and last names.

Instructions say:
Include the data fields used for contact "matching" based on your configured Duplicate Matching rules. For the default duplicate matching rules, you would include 3 columns in each row with the contributors' First Name, Last Name and Email Address.

But in the match fields step of the import, there are no choices offered to match first name and last name.  E-mail, external ID and Contact ID are all choices, but I have none of these.  (That's the point of importing . . . external ID and contact ID haven't been established yet)

So how can I import this file and match these names?  Thanks,
Thanks to those who help create and enhance civiCRM!

You need to change the default "Strict" rule for identifying duplicate "Individual" contact records. The default setting for this rule is to use "Email Address" only. You can change it to use First and Last Name - and then these should appear as alternative "match to contact" options in the contribution import.

Go to Administer CiviCRM >> Find and Merge Duplicate Contacts - and "Edit Rule".
