When you clone a civievent in civicrm, the cloned version of the event does not have the custom field data from the original, and does not even have the custom fields at all.

more detail:

Custom data field sets can be applicable to particular database objects (like contacts, locations, events)
In the case of events, a custom dataset can more specifically be applicable to either all or only one event type

if you close an event that has been created with custom data in your custom data fields, the cloned instance of the event:
1) does not have the custom data from the original event
2) does not even have the custom data fields available to add new custom data

I wanted to reply to say that we fixed the problem, and the assumption is that there was some problem in custom code that was creating drupal nodes for each civievent when a civievent was created, or cloned.
