Joomla 1.x CiviMail 2.06 Bounced email
January 11, 2009, 07:38:57 am
We installed civi on a joomla installation and subscribed to uas.coop SMTP.

It's been a couple of months I have been trying to get the mailer to work. It has taken so long because I return to it from time to time and play with different settings. We ended up using constant contact but I still have hope that I can make civimail work.

I set up a sub domain and modified the MX entry and it was successful. uas reports all functioning properly.

I entered the information as per the instructions on the uas page and updated tokens to reflect where the email originated from.

The only issue I can see is, perhaps, is that Bluehost is blocking port 20095

Note: CiviEvent worked great at registering users when I used LOCALHOST as SMTP (it would not work using the normal SMTP for the domain). When uas is set in SMTP settings civiEvent returned the message below.

I think civiMAIL is the bomb and getting it to work is worth all the time tracking down solutions. Thanks to everyone, especially Shane, for trying so hard to do this for non-profits. As an unpaid administrator I appreciate the reality of working for free to achieve positive change.

Any suggestions to my dilemma are appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Begin error message for CiviEVENT

Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred.

A fatal error occurred when CiviCRM attempted to send an email (via SMTP). If you received this error after submitted on online contribution or event registration - the transaction was completed, but we were unable to send the email receipt.

This is probably related to a problem in your Outbound Email Settings (Administer CiviCRM » Global Settings » Outbound Email). Possible causes are:

    * Your SMTP Username or Password are incorrect.
    * Your SMTP Server (machine) name is incorrect.
    * You need to use an Port other than the default port 25 in your environment.
    * Your SMTP server is just not responding right now (it is down for some reason).

Check this page for more information.

The mail library returned the following error message: Failed to connect to civismtp.uas.coop:20095 [SMTP: Failed to connect socket: Connection timed out (code: -1, response: )]

The only issue I can see is, perhaps, is that Bluehost is blocking port 20095

You might want to do a telnet from the shell on your bluehost server to check if this is the case. From my localhost, the output is:

Code: [Select]
telnet civismtp.uas.coop 20095
Trying 67.212.170.242...
Connected to civismtp.uas.coop.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 sh.uas.coop ESMTP qpsmtpd 0.40 ready; send us your mail, but not your spam.

Most likely BH is blocking the outgoing connection

Thank you , Lobo.

I sent a trouble ticket yesterday to Bluehost. I logged into Cpanel and went to Security >>SSH/Shell access and it's asking me for my photo ID. I think I'll send them my driver's license so I can telnet later.

Will post here if, indeed, Bluehost is blocking port 20095

Cheers,

John

So that's what it was. Bluehost was blocking port 20095. I bought a dedicated IP and now Civimail works! A dream come true.

Now I can ditch Constant Contact and get down to business.

Thanks!
