CiviCRM for Alumni. A few questions.
January 13, 2009, 12:54:16 pm
From what I read, CiviCRM(coupled with Drupal) is a perfect solution for an Alumni org.

1. What kind of a frontend to the Alumni user does CiviCRM provide? I see the backend, but don't see an example of a front end. Can an alumni user search for other alumni? Can they view current news etc. Anyone have a demo?

2. Does CiviCRM include forum functionality? If not, what free software could I use to enable forum functionality?

3. Is there anyway that we could allow alumni to post job offers etc. If so, how could we do that?

Thanks!

Hopefully someone will post with links to real-life examples - but generally speaking:

CiviCRM Profile is the "feature" used to configure front-end directory / search interfaces. You can read about it here:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Profiles+Admin

.. and see a demo / example (not nicely styled :-) ) here on the CiviCRM public demo:
http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/profile?gid=1&reset=1

(Keep in mind that Profile allows you to pick and choose which fields to include in search form and which to show in listings.)

No. Drupal has a forum module. You could also use SimpleMachines forum (which is what we run here).

I'd probably use Drupal CCK for this (create a Job Posting content type etc.)

Dave said, "I'd probably use Drupal CCK for this (create a Job Posting content type etc.)"

There's a new O'Reilly Drupal book, Using Drupal, by Angela Byron, and more. Chapter 3 is "Job Posting Board." It says that they use CCK and Views to create job openings and browse through available jobs. I'm still on Chapter 2, but I like this book. It's well written, easy to follow, and seems to cover a lot of stuff, concisely.

You may use Job Search module, recently ported to Drupal 6.x

http://drupal.org/project/jobsearch

For forums, use Advanced Forums + a little css play to make it look nice.

For alumni front end you may also use the Views 2 + CiviCRM integration (currently under development).
