Newbie question on Relationships

Hi,

Fairly new to civiCRM and also constituent relationship management in general.  Some general question about relationships.

- Is there any problem with having a variety of relationship types?  Does it make life more difficult later when trying to use the data?
- Current employer seems to have a special place.  However, for my org I'm not usually interested in employer relationship.  I was very tempted to co-opt the employer field and use it to show the primary organization each contact is currently related to (usually a foundation or school).  Somehow I'm hesitant.  Any opinions?

Anyone with a lot of experience with constituent management want to weigh in?  Are there documents with best practices that can help me understand best practices in crm as a general thing?

Hey pdowling,
We've been successfully using relationships for a non-prof org to manage memberships and also account ownership. (We have a few great salespeople that are responsible for certain accounts that are frequent contributor$.)

I don't know of any best practices documentation but I find that the way we've been using it really helps management of the constituents.
