I have a profile that uses a custom file field.  The profile is used only for User Registration on my Drupal site.  When I complete all the profile fields, including putting an image file in the file field, and save the profile all goes well.  When I view the newly created contact record in CiviCRM the image isn't there.  When I go to edit the contact record through CiviCRM the file field is empty.

The custom file field works perfectly if I create the new contact through CiviCRM .  I've been searching a long time for an answer, but like my file field I've come up empty.

Can someone please point me in the right direction? I'd be very grateful as I'm close to wrapping up this project, but this has stumped me.  Thank you in advance!

Currently it is not possible to upload files via User Registration form using Custom Data.

My understanding is that this limitation is because we haven't figure out how to do it given that the User Registration form POST is controlled by Drupal and not by CiviCRM. If you figure out a way to fix this, a patch would be awesome.

Your alternative is to direct folks to a CiviCRM Profile for registration, and enable User Account Creation in the Profile's Advanced Settings. Then you should be able to register them, collect info and upload attachment(s).
