Errors installing CiviCRM into Joomla - Directory and URL methods
January 17, 2009, 09:49:36 am
Hello!

Attempted to install the CiviCRM component into Joomla.  Attempted to use the "Install from Directory" and "Install from URL" methods.  I chose these methods because the upload limit within Joomla is 2MB, I think. ??? Not successful with either one.

"Install from Directory" error messages:
JFolder::create: Could not create directory
Component Install: Failed to create directory.: "/home/abc/public_html/z_civicrm/joomla/components/com_civicrm"

Install Component Error

"Install from URL" error message:
Warning: file_put_contents(/home/abc/public_html/z_civicrm/joomla/tmp/civicrm-2.1.4-joomla.zip) [function.file-put-contents]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/abc/public_html/z_civicrm/joomla/libraries/joomla/filesystem/file.php on line 297

QUESTION
Please let me know what is going wrong and what is needed to correct it.

Thanks in advance,

WP1

you might want to search the forums and see for potential work-arounds for the install from directory issue. the install takes a fair amount of time and memory beyond what many cheap hosting providers allow, and hence it fails. We are not sure of how to work around that issue, but a few folks in the community have tried different ways to get around the restriction. Note that we do not control the install process (its driven by joomla and hence our ability to debug/fix is limited)

WP1, Making sure that all the directories listed on "Help >> System Info >>  Directory Permissions" (in joomla backend) are writable, might eliminate some/all of your errors.

I can't tell from what you've written . . . did you previously unzip and upload the civiCRM package before installing from Directory?  That's what you need to do - the directory it installs from is on your server.

I initially faced the same problem with a Fedora10 box.

Solution was chown and chgrp of the Joomla directory and all sub-directories to apache.

Depending on your Linux version the own and grp may be something else.

Thanks for the tip. I had the same problem and this solution worked for me, too.

I've set up CiviCRM on two different hosting environments now and have had very different experiences with the two. With shared hosting under HostGator the installation goes smoothly. I can do a Joomla one-click install (Fantastico) and a CiviCRM ZIP upload/install and be done in 10 min.

With shared virtualized (Virtuozzo) hosting on Media Temple I've had lots of headaches. No one-click for Joomla 1.5 but that's not a big deal; that install is still easy. But lots of problems with CiviCRM. At least, I've been able to get an installation working there by changing the directory ownership. Hopefully, that won't lead to any gotchas down the road...

Someone has made Joomla/civiCRM packages that you can install all at once (when you're done civiCRM is already installed).  Here's the link about it:

Sounds like it would be worthwhile.
