How to Personalize emails to organizations?

Hi,

I'm setting up a membership site where members are organizations ...

There is no field for contact name within orgs and I'd like to be able to send out personalized emails to these members.

I was intending to set up a relationship to relate individuals to orgs, for e.g. "Main Contact for" and then emailing to the individual.

Before I go ahead I'd like to learn how other people currently manage this

Currently CiviCRM does not allow Organization sign up for Membership. You can use "On Behalf of Organization Contribution feature" (http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-2964 ), which will allow members of Organization to sign up for their Organization.

When you sign up using "On behalf of" feature emails will be sent to both organization and individual. It will also created relationship between them.

Thanks for the response and the link, I wasn't aware of this.

I've already imported members and can add individually through admin. Is this the only way member orgs can sign up themselves? Any idea how it will affect existing entries, will I need to redo?

For existing organization members you could create related individual contacts with login account. And when individual logs in, the dashboard will have the option to renew its related organization's membership (provided they are already member). OR individual could optionally choose to signup on behalf of any other related organization who do not have a membership.
