Adding new data to existing contacts
January 21, 2009, 02:18:29 pm
I support a CiviCRM install with over 1000 contacts and I'm anticipating that we'll have some new data (custom fields and possibly activity data) for some of them that we could do with importing. Is this possible to do at the moment, and if so, what's the best way to go about it? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Versions installed are CiviCRM 1.9 and Drupal 5.9. Thanks.

For custom fields ....You should be able to use Import Contacts with the "Update" radio button selected ("For Dupicate Contacts"). Including the CiviCRM Contact ID in your import file as "match to contact" value is the most reliable method - so depending on the source of the new data - you should ideally EXPORT your contacts from CiviCRM to a CSV file, then add your new custom field columns to the "spreadsheet" and then re-import with the added values.

Definitely experiment with this on a test copy of your site - and with just a few records initially.

For Activities - not sure if Activity Import was part of 1.9. If so, you can also use the CiviCRM contact ID to match your new activity records to the contact database records.

Thanks Dave, that's good to know. I was planning on upgrading at some point soon anyway (although 1.9-2.0 looks a bit fiddly!) so if we can't import to activities yet, we can do it further down the line.
