civiCase component
January 25, 2009, 04:56:43 am
I want to try civiCase on my windows laptop and setup a configuration for our charity. Where is the download component? I am assuming I have to install civiCRM first. When I tried the download link it failed.

1. what link did you try?

2. You will need to download the 2.2 alpha versions from: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=177914&package_id=212251

3. You will need to enable CiviCase and configure it. The first draft of the documentation is here:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMUPCOMING/CiviCase+Configuration

Comments and feedback would be great and much appreciated :)

Thanks, I have installed civiCRM on my local Joomla! install and will now go to step 3. I will be reporting as I go!

First hurdle! There is no "Use a copy of one of the Physician Health Program files that are included in the 2.2 distribution as a starting point - and edit it to meet your requirements.
_ <civicrm_root>/CRM/Case/xml/physicianhealthbc/ReferralToCounselor.xml_"

such directory. I have downloaded version 3. I have an empty Joomla! install with only admin.

Your instructions "http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMUPCOMING/CiviCase+Configuration#CiviCaseConfiguration-4.Enablecomponent" do not exist for enabling the component

Advice needed (without a bit more confidence that I can get this running in reasonable time I shall abandon this CRM).

Apologies, I was not looking at the correct root point. The case dir. has been found.

I will be finishing the draft CiviCase configuration document shortly (today or tomorrow) - and filling in the missing pieces. I'll post back here once I think it's reasonably complete and then it will be helpful to get your (and others) feedback about which parts need more fleshing out / info / etc.

It will also be helpful if you can post a bit about your case management setting, use cases etc. - and assuming you get CiviCase up and running, share your configuration files so that folks in similar settings can learn from them.

Thanks for keeping me informed. Let me be blunt, I am a complete novice. I can see stuff about case in the civi folders but I cannot see anything called a case component (needs to be enabled)  and it is not shown in the admin side (just contribute, pledge, member and event). What I (think!) I need to do is to set up a user (FE) who can initiate a case for a client and log the case history. Do I need any of the existing components just listed to do this. What constitutes a case?

PS I am running a local server for analysis purposes and have no email facilities. Meanwhile I'll keep reading the manual and try to make sense of all this. It may be of interest but we have investigated a system www.charitylog.co.uk. This is roughly what we are aiming to emulate. Thanks.

I've now posted a pretty complete first draft of documentation for CiviCase configuration which hopefully will help you make progress. However, I will caution that this is a "first release" for CiviCase and it's still in alpha - so you may or may not find it a good fit for your current needs.

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMUPCOMING/CiviCase+Configuration

As noted in your other post, CiviCase is not accessible to FE (front-end) users in Joomla.

Yes, I have now seen this and will study it further. I did try to create a "New case for New client" and at first pass got an error page refering to the need for an xml file. However there does now seem to be that client in the system.

I have got through at the FE by logging in as a Joomla! registered user and going to a menu item I've setup for civiCRM and get a dashboard page basically saying I have no records in the various rows shown except a group I've setup.

What I want to do is setup a group dealing with Information and Advice and have clients under that (the client above is there - no other groups yet anyway). The I want to go through a trial client dialogue.

QUERY, in my other post you reply: "For Joomla! - all CiviCase functionality is done in the "back-end" (admin interface).". Are you saying that our office case workers all have to log into Joomla admin interface (and therefore be exposed to ALL of Joomla! workings) just to handle cases? This would surely give me serious Joomla! management problems!

If there is anything here so far that I need guidence on the please let me know. Hopefully I can pick up speed and be of use (although I do not want to end up being a PITA here). Is is OK to keep this thread "open" as a means of progressing or should I use separate posts from now?

Any further feedback welcome.

I'm surprised that you were able to access the CiviCase dashboard from a Joomla FE menu. As I said earlier, CiviCRM is primarily a back-end module in Joomla! - and only selected "constituent / public" pages and functions are explicitly set up to allow front-end access (e.g online contribution pages, event registration ....). There are some posts on this forum about "hacks" to limit some back-end users to ONLY seeing CiviCRM functions - but you'd have to explore that. I doubt if you can force the complete CiviCase workflow to work in the front-end.

Your options as I see it are:
* use a Drupal or Standalone installation for your case management functionality (which avoids the FE / BE issues).
* don't use CiviCRM / CiviCase (find another toolset / solution)

Caveat - there may be some Joomla! gurus out there who can provide you a viable work-around ???

Hi, just trying out your wiki to get a trial up & running for our Centre - we are keen to trial it and give feedback.
When I get to:

"Copy the sample CiviCase settings file to the configuration directory:" I can't find the file Settings.xml where I'm told to look, or anywhere, so I'm stuck there. What do I do?

Thanks, Barry

Barry1, the settings file contains this in my fresh install:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<Settings>
   <!-- At the moment this is the only setting.
      List the group whose members should appear as contacts on all Manage Case screens.
      Only one group name is supported for now. -->
   <group name="PermanentCaseContacts" />
</Settings>

But if you have further queries maybe a didicated port would serve you better.

In answer to Dave, The FE is a page showing "Your Groups", Your Contributions", etc., and are not populated due to it being a fresh install. I did create a group and it appeared in the groups list. But as you say this will not provide full access so I accept that. Will it be easier to setup a Drupal or standalone (bearing in mind I am trialling this on windows (WAMP) but the final install will be on a Linux Ubuntu server)?

Suggestions as to alternative toolset/function (SugarCRM?)?

Hi Barry - You should have the following directory in the codebase that you downloaded and installed (using the Alpha3 release):
CRM/Case/xml/physicianhealthbc

... and it should include Settings.xml

If you've installed CiviCRM for Drupal - your CiviCRM codebase will probably be under <drupal_root>/sites/all/modules/civicrm

Please update your forum profile to include your CMS (Drupal, Joomla or Standalone) and version, CiviCRM version, etc. That will help us to help you get going. Looking forward to your feedback etc.

I think a Drupal + CiviCRM install will be your best / easiest environment to evaluate / implement CiviCase - giving you good flexibility for controlling access to CiviCRM / CiviCase and other admin functionality etc. You may need to do some minor tweaks during install for the WAMP install - there are a number of posts on this forum w/ help for that.

Yes, thanks, I have decided to setup another site with Drupal. I've been waiting for an opporotunity to compare Drupal with Joomla! anyway.
