Structure Question
January 28, 2009, 07:46:47 am
Hello,

Thanks for the great piece of software... It looks like it will handle everything that I need.

I have a few questions about how to setup civicrm for my Organization.

It is going to be used for a State society that is a member of a National Society.  The State Society has Chapters.  All 3 "levels" have dues, so National/State/Chapters all pay dues, and there are Life memberships at each level... so...

We want to use this for several things:

1.  Keep track of members (Directory)
2.  Keep track of Dues and Payment Status
3.  Keep track of Positions Held within the Organization (Both Current and Past)
4.  Allow users to edit some of there own Data (address, phone, email etc..) but not dues status etc...

Will Civicrm work for this.... I think so but not sure..

as Far as the structure questions, to keep track of dues, Do I need to setup an organization for each level to keep track of dues?

A little advice would be great.

The answers to some of your questions depend on what "keep track of" means, and whether each of the 3 levels of membership are managed separately or as a single membership w/ options. If you want to "see" 3 distinct memberships for a person who joins at all 3 levels, then you will need to create organizations for the National Society, Maryland State Society, and each of the Chapters. Then create a membership "type" for each.

Keeping track of positions held can be done pretty nicely via "relationships".

Users can be allowed to edit their own "contact data" (address, etc.) using CiviCRM Profiles (basically custom forms that you assemble and provide links to).

HTH,
