Entering current date as default value

I have a custom data field for contacts which is a start date.  Is there any way to configure it so that the default value is the current date, when the contact record is created?

currently not, but this has come up a bit too often that we should fix this in 2.3. Can you please file an issue

Has this capability to set a date field to the current date  been included in the current versions (I'm on 4.1.2)?

I have a profile I use for web signups where I want to capture the signup date as a custom field.

unfortunately not :(

If you could work on this issue would definitely make a good addition to the code base
