        * Remote Server connection failed, failed to open stream: no suitable wrapper could be found
        * Invalid URL

using

http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=civicrm&filename=civicrm-2.2.experimental-joomla.zip&use_mirror=superb-east

the same happens if you try

http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=civicrm&filename=civicrm-2.2.experimental-joomla.zip&use_mirror=

I am not sure if I am a candidate for your request! But I have a query. PS I am a bit of a novice here and as a volunteer for a UK charity local branch I am trying to assess if CiviCRM + CiviCase can meet out needs. I am willing to put in the hours if it's a goer.

I have installed CiviCRM 2.2 Joomla! from the downloads. The Joomla! install was done OK. And the CRM went OK. I seem to have now a DB with jos_ and civicrm_ prefixed tables - OK (maybe?). In my localhost (installed on my XPPro laptop under WAMP) I have a www/civicrm dir. which contains the Joomla! install and a www/drupal folder (Drupal!) which contains what appears to be all the CiviCRM codebase because that's where the CiviCRM settings file points to.

Even stranger, under the Joomla dir. C:\wamp\www\civicrm\administrator\components\com_civicrm\civicrm, I seem to have a repeat set of all those under the drupal folder less the standalone dir. Should these really be there??

Not only that, under the drupal dir. /sites/all/modules/civicrm there are folders for Joomla!, Drupal, Standalone and such. I am way past confusion at this stage.

Is that right (we need two top level dirs. and the other mentioned to have a complete Joomla! version of CiviCRM)?

What's dissappointing is that end users have to log into the Joomla! backend to use this version i.e. there is no front end as such; it seems as if CiviCRM is within an Admin window. I can log into the FE but it's a bit bare (due to being a blank system I suppose). Is it useable in some way? I know someone has pointed me to another Joomla! version but do not know what it is - http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,6362.msg28086.html#msg28086.

Feedback welcome.

I am also getting that error message for the url install from one of my accounts. Which makes me think it is a server setting.

@cantthink

I think if you can you may want to delete all of the civicrm and start fresh with the install from directory option. Make sure you use the joomla package.  But also, I would start your post as a separate thread, it's not really on topic for this thread.

See post--"Why is this error message appearing? How to correct it?"

Worked like a charm for me.

the CiviCase release is the first release of CiviCase. It was developed for a client on Drupal and hence by default all functionality is restricted to the backend. If you would like a large part of the functionality to be exposed to the frontend in Joomla and tailored for your needs, you will need to modify some of the code and/or hire someone to do the same (our professional services listings is here: http://civicrm.org/professional)

I'll do a test install later and report hack any findings.

Is there a changelog?

Interesting -

I did a completely fresh install - and I tried again - I still get the error message.

I am using a VPS on WestHost.com - I have the PHP memory increased (I have another site running CiviCrm/Joomla) using WestHost also.

most likely your hosting provider has a firewall setting which prohibits calling other hosts. The relevant code (from the joomla installer is) which returns the error message is: libraries/joomla/installer/helper.php

Code: [Select]
        // Open the remote server socket for reading
        $inputHandle = @ fopen($url, "r");
        $error = strstr($php_errormsg,'failed to open stream:');
        if (!$inputHandle) {
            JError::raiseWarning(42, JText::_('SERVER_CONNECT_FAILED').', '.$error);
            return false;
        }

You should use the install from directory option

OK I just was looking to see if (apart from the installer) there was anything else to check out
