Activity types do not appear in drop-down

Hello. I'm trying to configure a new installation of CiviCRM on Drupal. Everything seems to have gone smoothly except not all of the enabled Activity Types appear.

When I create a new activity, only Meeting and Phone Call appears in the Activity Type drop-down. When I check in the Activity Type Options page (under Administer CiviCRM) I see many more enabled, including Email and SMS. How do I get these to appear in the drop-down?

We don't allow creating of activities of type Email and SMS via "New Activity" interface. When you send Email, an activity is automatically created.

Also - there is no way yet in the "out-of-the-box" version of CiviCRM to originate SMS messages. However, if for some reason you want to record the fact that an SMS was sent to a contact - you could create a new activity type - "SMS Sent" from Administer CiviCRM >> Option Lists >> Activity Types. Then that activity type would appear as a choice in Other Activities drop-down.

CiviCRM 4.1.5

There is a To Do activity type in the the database but it does not appear in the drop-down. In 1.9 it did

The activity type is enabled. Only four of the many "out of the box" activity types appear in the list. Is there any other thing that must be done to configure?

When you see "in the database" - you need to verify that there's a civicrm_option_value row for that activity type AND that the component_id column is NULL AND that the option_group_id for that row is the same value as the id of the 'activity_type' row in civicrm_option_group (generally this is 2).
