How accurate is the 'tracked opens'?
February 03, 2009, 05:22:18 am
I am sending out a newsletter to about 2300 recipients. I am wondering how accurate the tracked opens actually are. For example, within 5 seconds of sending it it reports over 200 tracked opens. Along with this, some folks I know that it's reporting have definitely not opened it. Why does it report that? Is it something with receiving mail servers? Is there any way to get a more accurate reading?

Currently we embed 1px image in html mailings. So when user opens his mail we make a callback to CiviCRM and record open.  In case of text mailings opens won't be tracked. Also in case of html mailings, if you are using Thunderbird, you will get option Show images. So once user clicks on show images, trace open will be tracked. Not sure what is happening in your case..

As Kurund wrote, we use 1×1 pixel transparent images to track opens. Maybe some intermediate servers or anti-spam/virus software tests whether the stuff under there URLs is an image (as opposed to a virus), and hence the checking…

Unfortunately, we’re not aware of a better way of tracking opens.
