Maybe this already has been mentioned but it might be nice to go further than "preferred email" and "use for bulk mail". A lot of the contacts I work with have private emails and public emails. If they have a public profile based on contact data, I'd like to offer my contacts that choice. Setting up an email as a custom field has not worked well for me as it is not clickable in search results.

Have you made visibility of profile field (Custom field that is used in profile) "Public User Pages and Listings" ?
