will country "Serbia and Montenegro" disappear on upgrade from 1.9 to 2.2?

We are on 1.9, but I have been assured we will upgrade in the coming months.

Serbia and Montenegro split in 2006.

The CiviCRM country table has Serbia, has Montenegro, and not only that, has "Serbia and Montenegro".  So of course, we have a contact whose country is "Serbia and Montenegro".

I asked that we take out "Serbia and Montenegro", but the answer was the country table is maintained by CiviCRM, so this will be handled automatically when we upgrade.

Is this true?

We will maintain all three entries, as otherwise we would have to make your decision for you – and I’m pretty sure that assigning all the contacts with ‘Serbia and Montenegro’ addresses to either Serbia or Montenegro would be a bad idea.

In CiviCRM Admin you can edit the list of countries shown in the interface, so you can simply disable ‘Serbia and Montenegro’ there.

Was there a typo?

I would understand if you had typed "good" instead of "bad".

We have a contact assigned to a non-existant country.  How could it be a bad idea to assign him to his correct country?

Thanks,

it was not a typo :)

i dont think serbia and montenegro are on the best of terms :) assigning a contact to one of the countries randomly is definitely worse than keeping the contact in a non-existant country and letting a human make the change.

alternaively you can write some code to infer the right country from the address (which might be doable)

Right, this is exactly what I meant. :)

I thought about it, but we permit addresses with just the country filed in, so this would be at best a heuristic and need hand-holding anyway. Also, Serbians use the Cyrillic alphabet, while Montenegrins use Latin, so any real solution would have to come from somebody with good knowledge of the region.

Our one (only) contact whose country is "Serbia and Montenegro" is in the city of Zagreb.  Zagreb is in Serbia, a real country.  "Serbia and Montenegro" is not a real country.  I think it would be a "no brainer" to change the country of our contact in "Serbia and Montenegro" to Serbia.  In fact, I think one of the admins already did it.

I think the answer to my original question is this: disable ‘Serbia and Montenegro’ in the interface.

Thanks,

No, Zagreb is in Croatia.

"Serbia and Montenegro" is not a real country.

It was between 2003 and 2006.

No, because your contact is from a city in Croatia.

As I wrote before, it’s possible to write a heuristic that reassigns contacts from e.g. Novi Sad (and Нови Сад) to Serbia and contacts from Nikšić (and Никшић, and Niksic…) to Montenegro, but it won’t be 100% accurate (and requires somebody with an extensive knowledge of the region).
