Matching Gift integration with off-site employer databases?

Hi! CiviCRM looks like an exciting project indeed, and I'm looking into it for
a non-profit client who's currently with Blackbaud. Today he asked me about
"matching gift" software, and he gave me examples like "Gifts Plus" on this page:

Now I see from this CiviCRM feature list here:

that one can add "matching gift" functionality. However, I'm new to CRMs in general, so my question
is: does this note on the feature list mean that it's easy to add employer lookup to an off-site database like Gifts Plus?
Or only that it's easy to add a field to hold the information that someone gave a matching gift?

I'm a web developer who's fairly proficient in PHP and MySQL (at least I've hacked Joomla a bit), so I'm guessing
that if there's a free/cheap database of employer matching gift information out there, it shouldn't be too
hard to look up records in it. Has anyone tried this with CiviCRM? Any ideas?

as that document states, you can use custom fields for folks to enter matching gift information.

You will then need to write another script and/or use gift plus to automate any of the matching gift requirements. I'm not sure if there are any free/cheap databases of employer matching gift information out there

I have searched for the term "Gift Plus."  Any clarification of what that is would be appreciated.

@greenyoga: "Gifts Plus" is the first link in my original post. ;)

I haven't yet tried to solve this problem, since that client wound up not going with CiviCRM. But the challenge will probably be on the gift database side, not the CiviCRM side. It probably just depends on how easy the database managers make it to contact their database.
You'll need PHP or other scripting skills to make this work, though. :)
