Importing custom data fields with multiple values selected
February 10, 2009, 11:43:14 am
Hi,
We're trying to figure out the best way to import a field that has multiple values selected (eg contact speaks Spanish and French- both would be selected in the custom data field).
As of right now it seems if we import these with a second pass, the original data is overwritten.

Is there a way to import all the data fields at one time, and if not what is the proper way to import these so the data is all kept and not overwritten?

The last post I saw on this was from 2007 so I thought there may be some changes.
Thanks,
Sarah

Sarah,

I wrestled with this for a while too.  You can import multiple values for such data types by listing them in the same cell of your spreadsheet, separated by a comma and a space.  (In the actual csv file, this list would all be in quotes, of course.)  It won't work if there are extra commas, or no spaces, so be careful.  I found this by imitating what comes out in an export file when you have multiple values checked.

hi Sarah

It would be good if you update your forum profile with CiviCRM, CMS version, etc.

for latest civicrm version ( 2.1.4 )  you need to have only comma separated multiple values in double quotes.
(ie  "Spanish,French" )

You might want to test it for latest stable v2.1.4 go to : http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/
To take a look for latest civicrm release v2.2.beta1 : http://sandbox.civicrm.org/
