PHP5 Question
February 13, 2009, 08:44:58 am
Hi there,

Alright so this is an odd question. I am looking into installing CiviCRM onto a Joomla site. I look at the CPanel and it says the website is running PHP 5.2.6. However when I run phpinfo, the website is actually running PHP 4.4.8. I contacted the host about possibly migrating the website to another server which does in fact run with php 5, and they replied with this:

"Hi Chelsey,

Sorry about that. You just need to rename your PHP files to .PHP5 instead of .PHP and you will get the latest version of PHP.

Mike"

I have never heard of doing this before. Would this even work if I were to go into the CiviCRM folders and rename them to .php5? Would I have to do it to every php file, or just certain ones? Thanks for any help on this.

We've heard a few other instances of hosts giving this approach. Pretty sure it's not a good approach for CiviCRM (not maintainable etc.). You probably should go back to them and ask them for plan b - I think there are ways to accomplish the same thing with webserver configuration files etc. Else you might consider switching hosts if CiviCRM is important for your site.
