Can I do all this with CiviCRM?

Hi,

I am designing a project to serve the conservation sector in the UK. I am developing the site using Drupal as the CMS. The site will have the following features (among others, but these are the only ones which I would seek to control with CiviCRM):

- a publicly searchable database of conservation projects in the UK
- a publicly searchable database of those working in conservation
- a publicly searchable database of web links (possibly using another module)
- the option to associate workers with one or more projects
- the option to associate projects and workers with weblinks
- site staff can add entries to the database, and normal users can recommend entries for staff approval
- site staff can associate workers, projects and links after entry creation, normal users can recommend associations
- normal users can register their willingness to volunteer and specify preferred areas
- project staff can register special accounts which allow them to search and recruit volunteers
- a similar system for paid staff as that for volunteers
- members can maintain an on-line record of their volunteer and work activity through the site

Can someone with knowledge of CiviCRM please tell me if I can achieve these things using this platform? I don't need any details, I'll happily jump in and research as long as I know I'm not barking up the wrong tree!

Many thanks,

Richard Smith

CiviCRM does not have a 'project' concept. However, it does have an 'event' and you can treat a 'project' as an event. Depending on your use/definition of "weblinks" you can also treat "weblinks" as an 'event' with a different 'event type'. You will also need to use a custom group for volunteering records

Given the above, you can do most of your needs with CiviCRM and some custom code. A few things that might be an issue:

* associating projects and weblinks (assuming both are events)
* no workflow for normal users to recommend associations
* members can maintain an on-line record of their volunteer and work activity through the site

You might want to contact some of the UK CiviCRM folks if you'd like to chat with someone offline: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/board,34.0.html

Thanks for the swift response. It looks live CiviCRM is the right platform then, custom code not a problem as long as most of the infrastructure is there.
