Email to att.net apparently blacklisted - I need my NDR
February 16, 2009, 04:38:01 pm
All email sent to att.net, bellsouth.net, and sbcglobal.net bounces.
To resolve, I need the email non-delivery receipt (NDR).
Is relaying the NDR completely outside CiviMail?

Typical mail server log entry:
Feb 16 10:45:03 www sendmail[1431]: n1GIj3QS001429: to=<example@bellsouth.net>, ctladdr=<b+1+59+531+62e16b3999baf132-example=bellsouth.net@nscss.org> (517/517), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp, pri=123944, relay=gateway-f2.isp.att.net. [207.115.11.16], dsn=5.0.0, stat=Service unavailable

Note that my IP [69.168.53.114] is not in the log entry (more on that later)
My IP shows up on at least one (albeit defunct) blacklist (link)
(Separately, my IP doesnt comply with reverse hostname naming convention, might be an issue here)

My CiviCRM designer tells me that the log entry indicates a blacklist problem,
and tells me the att/bellsouth/sbcglobal grouping indicates an att blacklist.

My VPS provider seems to corroborate both observations (with appropriate apologies):
Quote
...our new ip block came already on some internal black lists ... ... not able to get them to do a bulk removal.  ... go to: http://worldnet.att.net/general-info/block_admin.html and request removal.  ..... blacklist entries are from the previous owner of the ip space (adelphia) and are at least 3 years old.

However, when I follow the ATT block admin link, I get asked for my IP from the NDR.
My sending IP isn't in the log entry, but it would be in the header of the bounced email sent back to me ie the NDR.
I can wing it, of course, but the actual NDR serves a purpose, and I want it.

Still slogging along on my dark and lonely quest to retain and inspect my bounce notifications (aka non-delivery receipts).

In my email user list on my VPS, I see several single letter aliases setup to forward to civimail. Email responses come in on VERP addresses that start with those same letters, and I deduce that bounce notifications are addressed to the "b" alias. Once I can confirm, I think my next step would add "b" alias settings to forward bounce notifications to me. Does this make sense to you more adept civimail users? Am I moving in the right direction?

(My complementary post to the webmin forum)

My VPS provider pointed me in the right direction.  For me the bounce notifications accumulate at var/spool/mail/civimail/mail/INBOX.Processed bounces.  I was able to figure out how to use the VPS server interface, virtualmin, to access this. The civimail "user"  isn't in the same area as the user accounts I set up for domain email, which is what stymied me. Armed with the NDRs, I was able to persuade att to remove the block.  My VPS provider tells me I may have to do this repeatedly until ATT's left hand recognizes waht its right hand is doing. However, I feel I have my problem well in hand, and learned a lot to boot.
