Importing Data for a Alphanumeric / Select Field - Help needed
February 18, 2009, 06:56:28 am
Hi,

I have a custom data field set to:

Data Type = Alphanumeric
Field Type = Select

I have five Multiple Choice Options for this field.

The problem is when importing data I am getting an Invalid value for field error.

Data format I am trying is =  this, is, data, that, import
I have tried using = "this, is, data, that, import"

Both get same message. It works if I change the field type to Multiselect on the data without the "". However that has raised seperate issues. I would presume that because you are allowed multiple choice options for a Select field then their must be a way to import more than one value?

I am currently running version 2.0.6

Please help it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris,
I think if you leave out the spaces between the values it will work. Try this: "this,is,data, that, import".

If it doesn't work, please let us know.

Chris:

Since the field type is "Select", it expects a single value (from the Multiple Choice Options)
You could use a type "Checkbox" / "MultiSelect" if you wish to import/store multiple data for a custom field.

The problem with the checkbox is I have lots of fields. Making the screen look very messy. But I also idearly only want them to be able select one value.

So can Select not take multiple choice?

Thanks for replying

Nope. You can use multi-select instead.

hi Chris

best bet would be export sample data for any field from civicrm that you want to import and check the supoorted data formats.
Try to import field data in same format as exported format, ( IMO ) This should work for all fields.
