Different default currency for different events
February 18, 2009, 05:36:33 pm
I am having to make civievent handle events in different countries all of which require a event fee. Though it can be the same currency for any given event, it is different currencies for different events. Is this anyway possible currently or would that be too complicated?

Thanks in advance.

currently civicrm is limited to one currency / install. Would be great if someone can step up and add multi-currency support to the project. Note that this is not a trivial project (though not terribly complex either). Contact us on IRC if you'd like to start work on the project

I would think in the simplest case that we need to make changes in two or three prominent places. One would be where it displays the amount and the currency it sends to the payment processor. The other would be for the internal records where it adds up to the contributions for the organizations as well as for the individual. Any other place where you can think of?

Thanks.

Oh. That's sad news.  ???
I was just about to run with CiviCRM as the solution for my Joomla integrated CRM and event handling. Darn.
I host events in more than one country. I have to price the events in the currency local to where it is hosted.
I think I have now looked into and tried every solution available for joomla integrated event management, and this is the one issue preventing me from moving forward. There is the odd assumption made that events are only going to be held in one country... or that it is ok to price events for in a currency foreign to the people going to the event (i.e. charging CA$ for an event in Finland).

Well.. here is a hand up for someone else looking for this feature. Wish I knew how to code. I'd step up and make it happen.

Cheers,
Jonathan   :-\

i would speculate that one currency / one language is the majority of use cases for CiviCRM currently.

You can consider sponsoring the feature and/or hiring a developer to integrate it with CiviCRM.

Yes. It seems this may be the case. I guess there aren't too many international organisations using the various joomla based event registration systems I've looked at, including CiviCRM.
It is, in my observation, rare for an international organisation/company to charge for an event in a country using a currency from elsewhere. For instance, in New Zealand a lot of Australian organisations host events. I've never seen them charge in AU$. As a Kiwi I can say that a customer in NZ would consider that really odd and annoying. Here in Europe (where I am at present) if a UK org hosts an event in Finland I doubt they would even consider pricing it in £ rather than €. Again, the people here would find that odd. Certainly all the events I see whilst I am here in Finland are put on by NON Finnish orgs (because I am only taking note of English events which typically are from the UK or the USA) and they are always priced in Euros.

It just so happens that this organisation (aka. Me) gets around to many countries.

Any idea what it costs for that kind of work? I haven't a clue.

Cheers,
Jonathan

To some extent it depends on the final specs etc. But if i had to guess, i would estimate 100 hours or so, which puts it in the 10K USD range to add this feature to core

yes, it definitely makes sense to have folks pay in local currency. However the number of orgs that are "international" in that sense are quite few at least in our ecosystem. For those orgs, this is a deal breaker

Thanks.
Without that sort of cash on hand, this is a deal breaker here.
Oh well.
The hunt continues...

Thanks for your help.
