Help me decide between Paypal Standard and Pro

I've been debating between using Paypal Standard and Paypal Pro for my payment processor. I'm new to ?CiviCRM and haven't configured anything yet.  I use CiviCRM 2.1.2 and Joomla.  I would like to have recurring payments, annual pledges and event registration, but also need virtual terminal for an annual fundraiser.  Any advice? Thanks.

Currently CiviCRM supports only PayPal Standard for Recurring payments. So I guess you will have to use PayPal Standard ..

I have Paypal standard and some donors have complained that PayPal makes them register, that the process is cumbersome and they don't want to do that.  I think I've lost some donations because of that.

However, you can't beat the price, and I have enabled recurring payments, which I'm glad to have.

Yeah - we had a lot of problems with users having trouble with paypal standard so we set up a merchant bank account and switched to their payment processor. About 10% of our users seemed to get confused by paypal. It wasn't an error - it's just the way they design their process to 'encourage' people to sign up to paypal

Thanks for the helpful information about the number of users baling out of PayPal. Did you consider Google Checkout at all?

Does CiviCRM link seamlessly with the merchant bank payment processor? Is the merchant bank account solution a lot pricier? Do they have any discounts for NPOs?

Hi Google wasn't an option for me due to currency limits. We switched to one that works in NZ. I have some notes compiled as a starting point / framework for bringing together info about payment processors. I'll post it as a separate thread and after feedback (filling in some gaps hopefully) onto the wiki
