Small bug with Click-Throughs?
February 20, 2009, 07:30:47 am
Hi.

I use CiviCRM 2.1.4 on Drupal 6.9.

I don't know if this is a major problem.  My click-throughs are working ok in general, however I have noticed two interesting things:

1) If I delete the user to which the mail is sent from my CiviCRM database, the click-throughs for that contact don't work any more, and instead they'll be sent to the homepage of the database only.  I noticed this because I had a test contact (myself) which I was emailing to make sure CiviMail (and CiviSMTP, which I'm using), was working ok.  I then deleted that contact, and since then tried clicking the links again on the email.

2) If I delete the email which is sent out to the contacts from CiviMail, then those contacts click on the link it brings them, again, to the main page of the database.

I guess these have to do with how the click-through links are tracked.  Again, I'm not sure if this is a problem, thought I'd let you guys know in case.  It seems the first one, at least, could be changed.  I realise the second one might be a bit more problematic to fix.

Thanks,
VS.

Click-through link that was mailed is associated with the contact that you deleted. So when you delete the contact all associated click-through are deleted. Hence IMO it's correct behavior.

When we delete mailing then also we delete click through urls associated this mailing. So guess it's correct behavior.

Argh, you’re right, we hook the click-through tracking way to tightly to the existence of a contact and of the email. We shouldn’t break the addressees’ email archives just because a contact (or a mailing) was deleted from a given CiviCRM instance; we should simply redirect the user without registering the click-through.

I filed CRM-4160 to track this (it’s too late in the CiviCRM 2.2 release cycle, so it’ll be fixed for CiviCRM 2.3).

Hi.

I agree with Kurund (sorry Piotr!) - I'd prefer the people who received the mail to still be able to get to the links specified, even if the mail / user no longer exists in the mail sender's CiviCRM database.  I think it looks unprofessional to have 'broken' links in emails, even old ones, and who knows when users will go back and check out links in old emails...  I certainly do this on occasion.

Thanks for the bug-report.

Cool, this means you agree with me, and disagree with Kurund. :)
