Import summary appears OK - but no new records added
February 20, 2009, 02:36:01 pm
Hi there,

I've just started using CivCRM. I'm having great difficulty importing contacts. Any help would be greatly appreciated... I'm completely lost!

I'm trying to import two sets of contacts, individuals and organisations (see attached CSV samples and mappings). The largest of these lists has 64 records.

I've cleaned both lists so that there are no errors at preview. Import appears to go smoothly, with the Summary screen reporting:

Quote
Import has completed successfully. The information below summarizes the results.
Total Rows    64    Total number of rows in the uploaded file.
Total Contacts    64    Total number of contact records created or modified during the import.

However, none of these records show up in the contacts. A look at the database in PHPMyAdmin confirms this.

A look at the results in /civicrm/upload reveals two things:
1. status_#.txt reports "No processing status reported yet".
2. the hashed upload files are either clean, or contain one of two errors: (a) "Invalid value for field(s) : country input value not in country table: "The Country value appears to be invalid. It does not match any value in CiviCRM table of countries." OR (b) "Invalid value for field(s) : country input is in table but not "available": "This Country is valid but is NOT in the list of Available Countries currently configured for your site. This can be viewed and modifed from Global Settings >> Localization."
Often, the same country name appears with both errors.

I've also tried adding contacts manually, and I get a seemingly related error - the countries and regions I've added at Global Settings >> Localization can't be selected.

Environment info: local mac running 10.5.6, MAMP with PHP 5.2.5 (Zend off, no cache), MySQL 5.0.41, Apache 2.0.59, Acquia Drupal 6.9, CiviCRM 2.1.4, accessed via Firefox 3.0.6/Safari 3.1.2.

Thanks and regards,

Re: Import summary appears OK - but no new records added

Does the upload summary appear almost instantly (so fast there is no loading bar)?

I was having similar issues (Showed successful import) and it was caused by null values in the import list for boolean fields. By making sure all fields had either 0 or 1 did it for this issue.

Also the country code thing, USA or United States etc dont work, it has to be US. When you get the error the code is valid but not available, you have to go to admin settings and add it, the default is US but no Canada for example.

Hope this helps,

John

Hi John, in response....

It is quick, but I am working locally with a contact list with only 64 records. All null values have been removed.

Re country names, the table that holds the list of names (civicrm_data.mysql) contains values for both the ISO two-letter code and the full name, so I don't think that's the issue. I had been having some errors with country names on preview, but I cleaned those up. On one import (and perhaps this is indicative of the nature of the problem), I received the 'invalid value for field' message for every single record, regardless of country name. But then the next time I attempted to import the same CSV file again, no error message was output, but still no records had been imported. So it is one of those annoying, intermittent problems.

And regardless, I still I can't select the correct country on the contact submission form...

I will attempt to delete some of the columns of data and see if this helps, and post again.

UPDATE, 22 FEB: I've stripped out all extraneous detail, so there are no columns of data set to 'do not import'. CiviCRM correctly identifies all column headings from the CSV, but the same problem is still occurring - import summary shows a successful import, but no data is added to the SQL DB and so no additional contacts are added. VERY FRUSTRATING. If anyone has any clues, I'd love to hear from you!

Update 23 Feb: I think I may have solved my issue - I ran the import on the sandboxed install (http://sandbox.civicrm.org) and found that version 2.2, unlike v2.1.4, displayed a message that it didn't like the syntax of the URLs in my source data CSV (no 'http://' in URL). v2.1.4 did not display an error message about this.

I cleaned this up, and ran an import on my local on my local dev PC et voila - it worked!
